If your cat treats their carrier like it’s haunted and hides the moment it comes out, you’re not alone. Vet visits don’t have to be stressful. A little preparation at home can help your cat feel more comfortable, make travel easier, and create a calmer experience for everyone.
Here are a few simple ways to help your cat feel more confident before their next visit.
Make the cat carrier feel safe and comfortable
Your cat’s carrier shouldn’t only appear on appointment day. Instead, leave it out so it becomes a familiar place to explore, nap, or hang out. Add a soft blanket, a favorite toy, or a few treats inside to help create positive associations.
As your cat becomes more comfortable, you can feed meals near the carrier—or inside it. Over time, they’ll start seeing the carrier as a safe space instead of a signal that something scary is about to happen.

How to keep appointment day calm
Cats thrive on routine, so unless instructed otherwise, stick to their normal feeding schedule and daily routines.
On the day of your appointment, try to keep your home environment as calm and quiet as possible by avoiding loud noises, busy activity, or anything that may startle them. Pheromone products can help create a sense of familiarity and comfort for cats. Spray it on a blanket and place inside the carrier about 15–30 minutes before it’s time for them to get in.
